An Engineer’s Route into Forensics
I came into this field the long way. I built my first computer at nine years old from library books on electrical engineering, with no formal instruction, and the habit stuck: work the problem from the evidence up, and do not accept an explanation you cannot trace.
That became a career in managed IT and litigation consulting, working directly with law firms — keeping the systems running that hold client confidences and matter data. Digital forensics was the natural next step. The same systems that need defending are the ones that hold the record of what happened when a defense fails.
Today I work as a cyber intelligence analyst: examining digital evidence, reconstructing events from data, and documenting findings to a standard that survives review by an opposing party. My qualifications are earned rather than inherited from a name-brand résumé, and I hold the work to the standard the discipline sets rather than the one a client would prefer.
